Bonfire night

This week in Yr6 we have been learning about Bonfire night and the stories behind it.Bonfire night is a special night in British history.

I will now tell you the story of why we have something called bonfire night, and why we celebrate bonfire night.

Once long ago there was a king, named king James. He was Christian but he didn't like the Catholic faith. King was a very unpopular person ,therefore not a lot of people admired him.

King James reign started when Queen Elizabeth I sadly passed away.

After a few years a gang of men plotted to murder the king directly under his chair by using plenty of gunpowder.
They came extremely close to killing the king but were and brutally dealt with when the police and the king. But Guy Fawkes( one of the culprits)was hurt the most. Guy Fawkes was hanged by a pole.

Hope you enjoyed our summary.

Science Week in Yr6

In Science Week Yr6 saw a circus clown come into our school!!! He was the best circus that I've ever seen. He did amazing tricks including the worlds hardest trick ever! Should we enlighten you on what the worlds hardest trick is? I thought we should. You balance on a 6 FOOT UNICYCLE and rode it while juggling! I know unbelievable however the thing that made it so good was who he convert it into science.

There were four forces that he told us to think about and those forces were:

Gravity,

Push,

Pull,

Twist

and last but no least is:
Centrifugal force

which is not a real force.

We did plenty of expirement and investgation and sadly now it reach the end of our lovely Science Week.

Cameron and Tenujaa.

Zoetrope

In 6W we have been making zoetropes. A zoetrope is a device that makes animations to a certain picture. Zoetrope comes from Greeks. Zoe means "life " and trope means "turn". The meaning is wheel of life or living wheel. The first one was made in China in a 180AD, the inventor was Ting Huan. The next day everyone kept on spinning them and annoying our teacher!!!!

Science Week hype!

In Glade Primary School an event that we experience every are has finally come, yes I'm talking about SCIENCE WEEK! After ten months Science Week has finally struck in 2009.

There have some fantastic Sciencist that have walk the face of the earth but Glade primary school are willing to be more sucessful than most scientists than:

Darwin,

Albert Einstein,

Isasc Neuton,
and trust me there's a whole lot more people.

I wonder what glade is to this Science but now I have no idea, but until then the mystery continues.

Year 6W African Masks

It's Black History Month at Glade!!! In 6W we have been looking at African Masks,so we degined our own. We started in our books then we did a rough draft. After we finished the draft we were allowed to do it on sugar paper. Most of the masks were looking really good so they were finished by Friday, some of them are on the wall they look very good .
By Kamile and Harry

Black History Month

THIS MONTH IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH! In our very own school there are going to be black dancers coming into our school to teach us how to do dances that they have learnt linking to their experience of their dancing career.

We are all waiting for this very rare moments of the year! We just can wait! We are expecting the number of dancers to be...just about 3, one girl and two boys.

It is going to be different for each year group.e.g.if year 3 do the same song as year 6,year 6 will obviously do the faster version of the song because we are much older, that is how the rota is going to be for the song selection.

There are only three dancers and there are twelve classes! So we have to do take it in turns other wise some classes will miss out their rare chance, A NOTE FOR PARENTS PLEASE COME AND

SEE US DANCE ON THAT DAY!!!

YEAR 6 SAILING

In year 6 we have going sailing for the past 3 weeks. Firstly we have to get our life jackets and wait for the instructor (it's really boring!!!) The instructor shows us what to do. Last week we put up the small sail (called the jib) But this week we put up the BIG SAIL!! So we could we could go faster!!! Harry's group nearly tiped the boat over, because the rope came out the pulley.

In the end we all got to sail on the black pearl (big boat) unfortunetly the rest got to go on a speed boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT FAIR !!!

The Future authors Of Yr6!

On Earth there have been lots of sucessful authors such as:
CS.lewis,
Roald Dahl,
Jaqueline Wilson,
Anne Fine,
The one and only Bestselling author JK.Rowling and so many other.

Speaking of JK.Rowling she
written plenty of good books
especially Harry Potter.

In class we have been doing short desciptive writing, which includes a Beginning, Climax and a ending. We did some plans to help us make our stories better and more sophisticated. The stories that we are focusing on are very exciting and ambitious but the story that stands out the most is The Tulip Touch.

Year 6 Samba Beat

A few boys of year six playing a samba drum beat in a parade. Featuring Stelios ,Foluso, Dylan and Charlie. Representing This weeks Carnival Themed Arts Week.

Arts Week at Glade!

This week as most of you know was Art Week and we did all different types of art. Our first was performing arts which took place when we were practicing our play and getting absolutely perfect-or when our teachers were satisfied. We spent about two or three days doing that before switching to some real artistic art. We began designing and making masks used for masquerade balls which we will hopefully finish...some time or another. We are also very exciting because on Sunday, 27 year 6 pupils will be off to West Runton, formally known as Kingswood Residential. The other 30 or so will be travelling off to Lambourne End and Aquasplash where we hope to have as much fun as the others...or possibly more. On Tuesday we also had the schools music concert where Christopher Elliot (Trombone),Aye-Marie Conteh(Violin) and Cathryn Bowyer (Clarinet) performed to many parents and pupils as well. We will hopefully catch you next week where we will give you the ultimate lowdown on everything that's happen then. More to follow!
Catch you later! =)

Charities

Year 6 did many things this week, one of which was R.E. In R.E we were focusing on chariy ties and helping people. We discussed many charities including Tearfund, Amnesty International, Oxfam and many more. We then had a go at making our very own charity in groups. They turned out great and we had a variety of charities including LifeRights created by Aye-Marie and Rayne, Helping Hands by Cathryn and Chloe and Child Benifit by Cori and Alyesha. We have a special powerpoint to show you that promotes one of our charities. Please click on the link.

This was just one of our creations that we made. As you can see we worked very hard. Look out for next week's special.......ART WEEK!!!More to follow...

The week before SAT's

This week, Year 6 have been busy working on excelling in our SAT's week which are next week! We've been especially touching up on our literacy skills and we would like to share three pieces of writing from our year 6 pupils. The first is from Christopher Elliot, 6P and he has written a diary entry about moving away:

Dear Diary,

I'm just about to go so I best be quick. I'm going to miss being at Glade, the headaching shout of Ms Patel, the boring assemblies, the spectactular field and forest, that's what I'm probably going to miss the most and my friends Zack, Geevan, Sulaymaan, Adnaan and a few others too. It's just not going to be the same.
But moving isn't to bad because I'm not moving that far and I'll still be able to visit and even better, I'll be attended the same school as my best friend, Corin. Me and Corin have been best friends since toddler years and of course some of my other friends from toddler years go there as well.
Oh, that's Mum, gotta go.
Later,
Chris

We also worked on writing our very own stories, here's one from Raghavi Thavanesan,6P:

It's a Mystery

As soon as Ali stepped into the room, a sudden chill ran down her spine. Guiltiness of intruding into someones private property filled her mind. Although this was the case, she realised that it was her own fault that she was there. Her own curiosityhad lead her inside the house and what had her Grandma always said? 'Curiosity kills the mind'. Her voice was ringing in Ali's head as if a warning. She wanted to get out but it was as if someone was controlling her and would not let her go. She saw a sofa which had it's springs torn from it, she then sawna giant hole in the middle of the room, Ali felt cautious as if she was being watched but she carried on observing the hole. it looked as if someone had been digging but no one was in sight...well, not yet that was. She realised something was worried.
All of the windows had their glass broken and the strong violent wind rushed in but in the fireplaces the fire was still burning. Suddenly, she heard a sound. It was coming from above her head but she saw outside that it only had one floor and the roof was barely there. She looked up and her heart beated so fast that she could not move at all...

Last but not least, we have our lovely Rhea Ahmed writing a contrasting diary of Christopher's version:

Dear Diary,
Moving isn't all that bad as I thought. I've already made a new friend. Her name is Emma and guess what? She's in the same class and school as me. Of course I'll miss my old friends but we can still contact each other. And anyway, me and Hannah will have lots of contacts especially since we're neighbours.

I was right, my room is fantastic and I've got the biggest room and I get to choose whatever colour I want fro the walls. What about Blue? No Pink? What do you think about Purple? Never mind, I'm too excited to choose right now.

I don't know why I was so nervous, I still get to see my friends and my room is fab, when I left my old house I was so worried but now I'm happy, very happy. I just remembered It's my birthday in two days and I'm supposed to meet up to play some bowling with my old friends and I hope they won't mind if Hannah tags along. I love the new school, it's so colourful and big. Hannah even gave me a tour of the school and speaking of Hannah, I'm supposed to meet her about...now!
See you diary,
Rhea xxx

So as you can see, we have been working hard preparing for our SAT's and at this rate, we are all likely to Level 5's!
Have a good weekend and wish us good luck on our SAT's next week!

Busy...Busy...BUSY!

In year 6, we have been preparing for SAT's week but amidst all of that, we have been working hard to improve out literacy skills. We did several writing and spelling tests and we have managed to show one of our completed tasks which was written by Rayne Leat, 6P:

Number Madness!

With the theme of our week, Making Changes Count, Year 6 really did have fun counting especially on Tuesday as it was Number Day. Ms Patel, the numeracy co-ordinator, Ms Patel, organised us a very special guest called Bubblz the Clown who came to visit our school and do some fun maths with us. For most of the week, Year 6 were busy praticing and brushing up our SAT'S skills. We sketched some pictures of Tutankhamun which is part of out Egyptian history topic.
We also made some detailed SAT'S Survival Guides which should help our next Year 6.
One of the other main things we did was persuasive writing which was used in our many class debates. Another thing we found out was our school play but I guess I won't spoil the surprise just yet...
Our SAT's test coutdown begins and we have under 2 weeks left so Year 6 better revise!
But have a good weekend and we will see you next week!

Assesment's Galore!

Year 6 have been busy, busy, busy with assessments this week because we were preparing for our SAT'S which is in April.

We looked at a particular literacy assessment about superheroes which we thought would tie in nicely with today's non-uniform theme: Superheroes.

And by the way, we had some brilliant superhero costumes so well done everybody!

Red Nose Day

Happy Red Nose Day!

Our week was full of treats and surprises especially today so lets start from the beginning...

On Monday, we travelled down to Hargreaves Scout Camp for Citizenship Day. We learnt a great deal of info and techniques to use in real life and to practice. We all received certificates at the end of the day for our participation but our overall winners were Cori , Amy, Louie, Bilal, Arec and three other Gilbert Colvin pupils who were rewarded medals by a famous actor from TV series 'The Bill'! More will follow next week.
To top this off, today we had a fun end to the week.

We started off with our well-practised red nose day dance 9.00 am and it was great to see the parents eagerly joining in! Then Keystage 2 were treated to Caterham pupils performing some comedy sketches.
We raised a lot of money for Comic Relief and we even had four of out Year 6 Pupils, Aye-Marie Conteh, Alyesha Moodley, Rhea Ahmed and Drenica Tahiri organise a sponsored silence which lasted for an hour. Here are some of their responses:

Aye-Marie Conteh
says:

It was extremely hard
especially at playtime with all our friends
tempting us but we managed to do
it and it was for a good cause. I was really happy when we raised eighteen
pounds for the sponsored silence and I hope it will help Comic Relief!

Rhea Ahmed says:

it was fun and i am very proud
to raise this much money for comic relief! It was hard but worth it for
charity!!! Every one who done it almost spoke but we done it and enjoyed
it!

Drenica Tahiri says:

It was a hard experience!! But
then again it was for charity, we hope that it did make a difference. the
silence was for 1 hour exactly and it was really hard during playtime as
everyone was being LOUD it is all going to charity and we hope you all had
a good RED NOSE DAY!!!

Friday, 6 March 2009

This week in year 6, we have been focusing on our R.E topic, Christianity and part of it included Neil Poole's visit on Monday. He talked to us about greed and money. He and his friend, Rob, showed us all about one of the stories in the bible called the Den of Thieves. We discussed it and did different activities and workshops.

We also had some of our very own year 6 pupils take part in the Swimming Gala and we can proudly say that we came 1st Place!

Also, we started our new topic in History all about Egypt and we so far we have been studying on Tutankhamun and different kinds of Pharaohs. We also had a chance to sketch him so we have been very busy with our work and hopefully, we will do the same next week as well.

Up,Up and Away!

As a part of our Literacy/ Art/History topic, we have had great fun with the topic of superheroes! We made up our own superhero and wrote a character description of them, after that we had the joy of making our own comics which were based on the 60's when they used to make marvel comics full of vivid ,colourful, lively comic strips. We also had the privelege to listen to some Caterham boys who came to give us a very useful talk about high school. We had a go at pop art and benday dots which were also used in the 60's.
And to add to the excitement, Class 6p had their very own superhero, Christopher Elliot, who was on a BBC documentary called 'Superheroes'. He took part in this with his own supehero, Minibeast Man.
But more importantly, it's the LAST DAY OF TERM!!!!!
Have a great holiday and keep safe!
Bye!

China Week at Glade: Behind The Scenes!

Ne Hao! Year 6 are having a crazy week full of various fun activities which I shall try to cram into one blog. Following on from Monday's exciting update, the next day we had a go at flower cutting which I have to say was a complete sucess. Here is our outcome:

Then, in the afternoon, we had a great chopstick challenge which Alyesha Moodley won! The next day, we were in for a big surprise when we got to make some special red envelopes containing chinese money. We then had the next round of the chopstick challenge which Cathryn Bowyer won.

After making some brilliant leaflets about China, we did some super chinese paintings and had the last round of the chopstick challenge which Raghavi and Drenica won. All four of them competed to find the chopstick challeneg champion which was...drumroll please...Ctahryn Bowyer! She and the three runner-ups got some very interesting prizes.

Overall., it was probably, in fact, definetly the best china week we've ever had!

Glade's China Week Extravaganza!

Gung Hei Fat Choy Everybody! Happy Chinese New Year! It's China Week at Glade. This week, we are in store for lots of surprises and fun activities. To start the week off, in our assembly, we had an exciting food-tasting session! First, we had our school choir sing us a Chinese New Year song, followed by a race between three of the teachers (Ms Leverton, Ms Patel and Miss Hartwell) and three of the pupils (Christopher, 6P, Jada, 3F and Bircon, 4M) were challenged to eat popcorn with chopsticks but the teachers were given a harder task to eat mini smarties with chopsticks!
After that, we had a food-tasting session with volunteers, Drenica, 6P, Roha, 6M, Dylan, 6M, Mrs Allen, Miss Foster and Mrs Maryon, tasting some new Chinese dishes.

Drenica Tahiri, 6P said:

It was scary experience and we didn’t know what we were eating as the dishes
were not revealed until afterwards. Our first dish was oriental bread this was
tasty but didn’t have much flavour. Secondly we had a vegetarian pie with a soy
sauce filling. Miss foster claimed it was similar to meat but that was impossible as they were all vegetarian dishes! Finally we had rice balls with a bean soup filling. This was an unpleasant taste as I ate it whole because Miss Willers dared me and I was and always will be up for a challenge. Luckily I didn’t throw up for I had a trusty drink of water beside me.

Dylan Tak, 6M said:

The bread was absolutely brilliant I would eat it any day. The pie was OK as I it was soft in the inside and a very nice pastry. The rice balls were not the best things in the world they were very gooey on the outside while the inside was not as appealing as the outside. My favourite dish would definitely be the oriental sweet bread.

Roha Khan, 6M said:
Over all I would say that this was a wonderful experience to taste different
food from China. I would definitely recommend the Oriental Bread to others
because of the sweet taste and because it was my favourite!

Year 6 look forward to the rest of the week and will keep you updated. Goodbye for now!

I Have A Dream...

This week, we have been looking at the history of Martin Luther King and the importance of Barrack Obama, Americans first black president, in relation to Martin Luther King Jr's 'I have a dream' speech.
We then worked on coming up with our own 'I have a dream' speech, where we spoke of our own dreams about the current issues in our world. Here is one of the speeches we wrote.

We have a dream that one day, on this planet, there will be peace, that there will no wars between neighbouring countries like Gaza and Israel. We have a dream today.
We have a dream that fear will not be felt by citizens of our country and that child abuse will not take place. We have a dream today.
We have a dream that hungry children will not suffer from starvation and they will be fed and clothed. We have a dream they will live in happiness and freedom. We have a dream today.
We have a dream that we will be treated with respect, justice and equality. That Racism will not take place and that all the countries of the world will unite as one to stop this offensive form of abuse. We have a dream that our colour of our skin will not matter and we will be seen as our inward personality and not our outward appearance. We have a dream today.
We have a dream that our future generation to come will be given great opportunities for jobs and rewards because of our input. We have a dream today.
We have a dream that innocent soldiers will not have to risk their life fighting for wars that should have never started. That we will live in peace one day. We have a dream today.

By Aye-Marie, Alyesha, Cori, Amy, Foluso, Tahmid and Hassaan. 6P

We also looked at the significant day celebrating Martin Luther King (19th January) as well as the day Barrack Obama became president. (4th November 2008)

Back 2 Skool!

Happy New Year to Everyone! It’s 2009 and Glade started the first week back with Neil Poole telling us about the importance of trusting each other and keeping focus and persistence in what we want to achieve. After that, the week got even better, especially for Year 6; In Literacy, we were learning about Native Americans and the stories they told in their tribe. We then wrote stories of our own and we have included Louie Stocking’s outstanding piece of writing for you to read. (Underneath)

Why Birds Eat Worms?

As the giant magpie silently glided in with his evil frown and his delicate wings brushing the air, he lowered himself down to the family of worms.
“Why, Hello there!” The bird said slyly. “I didn’t manage to see you there; you brown wiggly pieces of mud”
The magpie looked deeply into the worms little eyes with a wicked smile, he lifted his precious wings, approaching them as if he was going to kill the family of worms but strangely enough, he didn’t. At this point, the worm and his family were absolutely terrified as the evil magpie started to speak viciously to the worms.
“Oh! Don’t fret, don’t cry little fellow, you’ve got three more minutes to get down and scram before I crush you!” the magpie told the poor family of worms. The smallest worm burst into tears as he squeaked a little sentence out.
“Why you are doing this, I will never understand!”
“Well, I need a bit of soft scrumptious food to keep me healthy and strong enough to fly. Don’t I?” The bird replied with a smug smile.
“Oh pish posh! Who cares about filling your tummy? What about our survival?!” The worm cried helplessly.
“Pish posh? What sort of words are those?” The bird said confusedly “Anyhow, give me one good explanation of why I shouldn't’t tear you and your pathetic worm family to bits?”
The worm was silent
“Oh well, don’t worry if you are stuck for a reason, I will put you out of your misery and eat you right this minute!” The bird lunged towards him to take a bite but the worm cowardly slithered back and responded,
“Wait, what about my three minutes?”
“Oh yes, well, your three minutes start…NOW!!!”

The poor worm watched as the wretched magpie made fun of him snoring and looking at his pretend watch on his wrist.
“Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock, time’s running out. Two and a half minutes left…” He laughed menacingly.
“Stop making those weird unnecessary noises!” The family of worms complained.
“Excuse me?” The bird asked
At this sudden moment, the worm went up close to the worms and threatened in his face,
“Sorry?”
“Er..Nothing, I’m sorry, I…er” The worms stammered.
The bird had enough, as quick as a flash, he gobbled the worms up just like he promised, ripping them carefully to shreds and swallowing loudly, licking his lips.
The magpie set off for another journey to get more delicious food.
The bird lived evilly ever after and that is why birds eat worms.

By Louie Stockings.

Also in Maths, we revised angles and place value to help us in our S.A.T’s in May. We had a lot of fun in P.S.H.E/ History learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and Barrack Obama, America’s First Black President. Have a safe weekend and see you next week!
